“It interested me particularly that in the circus there was one wistful clown who climbed the high wire after the experts were done, and scared himself and us with his uproariously funny, incredibly maladroit moves up there. Slipping and sliding about, losing his hat, his floppy shoes, and holding on to the wire for dear life, he was actually doing stunts far more difficult than any that had...

Valentine's
After work, I went to the YMCA and read part of this kinda dumb New Yorker article about tortoises whilst I was sweating and huffing. Came back home and sat in the front stairwell with Samuel and ate half of a cheese pizza in darkness, then began work on recording my solo album of slow jams and love ballads. Be on the look-out for that hot number to drop in the next 4-6 weeks.

“Woman-beating rage-broccoli Chris Brown lip-synced his single “Turn Up The Music” (without being threatened by Sir Elton John) and danced roughly as well as a third-rate Chicago footwork dancer. He ended his performance by back-flipping off the stage, though sadly not off the earth.” Hey-o! Good zingers, Sasha Frere-Jones.

“I remember when I was a child at Coolin or Sagle or Talache, walking into the woods by myself and feeling the solitude around me build like electricity and pass through my body with a jolt that made my hair prickle. I remember kneeling by a creek that spilled and pooled among rocks and among fallen trees with the unspeakably tender growth of small trees already sprouting from their backs,...

Dreamt last night that I was sitting around in a dim room drinking wine with a few friends and Joan Didion, old Joan Didion. She was telling us in a hushed voice about her husband and her, back in the 1950s and early 1960s, registering in hotels under fake names and taking off their wedding rings when they would make love. I’m a lot more grossed out by this now than I was in the dream. Also...
