I really enjoyed this movie. I probably laughed about three times as much as all the uncomprehending Chicagoans sitting near me in the theater. That long, loving shot of Daddy Sam’s barbecue being piled on the plate is fucking mother’s milk to me. I’d put Bernie alongside Friday Night Lights (all versions)and Werner Herzog’s Into The Abyss as works that really ‘get’ contemporary Texas. It’s also good to see Sonny Carl Davis up there, co-star of Eagle Pennell’s The Whole Shootin’ Match, another crucial Texas movie.
